Aquinas's Moral Theory: Essays in Honor of Norman Kretzmann
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (May, 1999)
Authors: Norman Kretzmann, Eleonore Stump, and Scott MacDonald
Average review score:

Re: Tribute to Two Great Thinkers
This book honors two great thinkers in one collection of essays. The title of the book, "Aquinas' Moral Theory", tells that the authors included concern themselves with the various subjects related to Thomas Aquinas' rich account of human moral action and the principles of morality which help to define the nature of such actions. The subtitle, "Essays in Honor of Norman Kretzmann", tell us that the late Dr. Kretzmann is rightfully recognized as one of the great medieval and Thomistic interpreters of the past few decades. Not only is his own work of great value to scholars and students today; but that of his successors, Eleonore Stump and Scott MacDonald (who succeeded Dr. Kretzmann in his chair at Cornell University), is equally recognized as some the best scholarship currently being done. Readers of this book will find, among all the authors included, a scholarly rigorous and informative collection of essays which help those already familiar with the basics of Thomistic action theory and moral philosophy to delve more deeply into the relevant issues which are the subject of current debate in the philosophical arena.

Archaeological Perspectives on the Battle of the Little Bighorn: The Final Report
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1989)
Authors: Douglas D. Scott, Douglasd Scott, Dick Harmon, and Richard A. Fox
Average review score:

Historically Significant
Even though I know all the writers of this book, I'm still NOT biased when I say that Scotts, et al book has changed interpretation dramatically on the Little Bighorn fight. Having worked at the Little Bighorn Battlefield as an interpreter in 1985, I personally know how this interpretation changed, i.e. before the archaeological digs of 1984-85, most of us believed that Custer's men fell mostly to arrows. We now know that the U.S. soldier's were outgunned, thanks to this field work and as reported in the book. Since Scott's final report, headstones on the battlefield marking where "unknown soldier's" fell have been replaced by actual names, e.g. Mitch Bouyer. This reality came to place thanks to the forensic work of Dr. Clyde Snow (his complete report is included in this book). Finally, Scott and his team create a vivid picture of where the Indian warriors moved over the battlefield fighting for their families down the hill and across the river.

The Architect
Published in Hardcover by University of Queensland Press (2001)
Author: John A. Scott
Average review score:

Why do the innocent suffer?
Good question. What I really want to know is, when are more people going to wake up and start reading John Scott? This man is a master. With a small collection of novels, and some equally fine poetry, Scott has stunned me and every other reader to whom I've recommended him. His "What I Have Written" (1994) is my all-time-favourite Australian novel. "The Architect" is ostensibly a tale about two architects: an ageing German with drawers full of unrealized masterpieces; and a young, highly successful Australian devotee. When the master meets the student and proposes a collaboration, things very quickly get very dark. Scott takes us into some terrifying but fascinating moral territory here and, like the novel's German protagonist, the author is utterly relentless. For me, this novel is essentially an interpretation of, and a reply to, The Book of Job which famously explores the issue of undeserved suffering. You should probably be familiar with Job before reading this novel. I'd recommend David Wolfers' translation and insightful commentary on it in "Deep Things Out of Darkness", which Scott acknowledges as a source for this work. Wolfers reads Job as an allegory for the destruction of Judah by the Assyrians, and Scott applies this to a twentieth-century German context with fascinating results. If this novel really interests you, you might also enjoy Jung's dense but interesting "Answer to Job" (another of Scott's acknowledged sources). Reading them in this order - Wolfers, Scott, Jung - would probably be a rewarding experience. For all its intellectual complexity, this is a very visual novel. There are some stunning images in it, and a general absence of interiority (which probably accounts for the powerful sense of inexplicable evil it generates). Scott is also a screenwriter, and as this book is dedicated to his filmic collaborator John Hughes, I'm sure there must be a movie in the works. I can't wait to see it. I wish I could make it myself.

AutoCad 2000 Archetectural Desktop made quicker & easier
I thought that the design process was done when ACAD 2000 came to the public. I was wrong. Architectural Desktop has made many good and useful enhancements to it. In Desktop you actually draft in 3 dimensions. This book has been a great help in getting me up and running in it. It is set up so that you can start pretty much anywhere in the book. The potential for this program is beyond what I can calculate. To make the most of that potential you will need a good book for guidance. Architectural Desktop 2: Fundamentals, Instructor Manual is A MUST. I got this particular book because I can see the answers to the questions. This helps me to see my mistakes that much easier. I would recommend this book to anyone that already has ACAD 2000 Desktop and also to ones that are thinking of purchasing it.

Arco Guide to Joining the Military
I found this book to be both very imformative, and very humorous. It was a really good book, and I learned a lot from it. It covers the first interview with a recruiter all the way through basic training and into your career.

Arizona
Published in Hardcover by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (November, 1990)
Authors: Scott Thybony and Fred Hirschmann
Average review score:

Arizona
The book Arizona by Scott Thybony and Fred Hirschman is excellent in both its reading and photograhy. Both participants of this book have really captured the true essence of Arizona. My students were unfamiliar with all of the wonderful places and attractions our state had to offer them. Arizona history has in fact become a wonderful learning experience for my students, and this book has been a helpful tool in showing them how beautiful our state truly is.

Arizona Trout : A Fly Fishing Guide

An OUTSTANDING resource for the exploration of Arizona Trout
Here is the best tip that I can give anyone for fly fishing Arizona, ready? Buy it! Try buying it right here you won't find it in the shops yet. Get your credit card out, and type me a message right now telling me "thank you" so you don't have to hold yourself up e-mailing adam while you are getting ready to explore all the wonderful opportunities that are exposed in this book. I am absolutely impressed! In 1999, no less than three books on Arizona Fly Fishing have been released for the public. This book is a MUST HAVE for any fly fisher in the state of Arizona. If you have to buy one book, this is it. It is my favorite, did I say that? For those of you visiting the state, this resource is definitely one that puts you in touch with more information than most of the locals. Mr Johnson is obviously a very keen Arizona explorer with a fly rod. In a nutshell, you will not find any careless meanderings, no miss marked maps, just a Christopher Columbus of fly fishing here in our state. Gee's this guy has been around. The answers are there for questions that are very close to my heart. I will not go into detail about this book other than I TOLD YOU SO! Do you want Arizona Trout???

The Art of Miles Davis (Beaux Arts Series)
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (Paper) (April, 1991)
Authors: Miles Davis and Scott Gutterman
Average review score:

It's All Here
For fans of the great adventurer Miles Davis' music, this book is visual witness to the constant creativity of his music. He paints and draws in the way that he played-elegant, mysterious and sensuous. At other times, quick and skittering. The paintings are that, too. Layers of his solo imagination appear, curving, colorful, playful. They are painted. Tricks of musical fantasy, dual personalities, remembrances and hints are on the canvases. The bold strokes of his genius are displayed. Miles Davis was a never-ending surprise on the stage. He was intense, serious. He led music past the boundaries known and into so many new places in the heart, mind and soul. The textures and rhythms of the quest he led are captured in his art.

This oversized, paperback art book (originally published in 1991, the year he died) is long out of print. It has become rare and precious. Highly recommended for all who want to "see" what he saw and painted...and played.

The Art of Performance
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 2002)
Authors: Heinrich Schenker, Heribert Esser, and Irene Schreier Scott
Average review score:

The Art of Performance
This is an extremly important book by the great and most influencial music theorist of the 20th Century, Henrich Schenker. In this book, he speaks about contemporary performance practice and focuses in particularly on the technique of piano playing and piano practicing. There are chapters dedicated to specific techniques such as legato-playing and pedalling, and detailed discussions on dynamics, fingering, and rests. I highly recommend this book to all the musicians out there, it is simply too important to be overlooked.
